Japanese Group invests in Delsbo and Västerås

Japanese Asahi Kasei Microdevices aquires Swedish Senseair. Already in 2016, AKM started a collaboration with Senseair, and the fruit of this partnership is a new generation of sensors for measuring CO2 and other gases. The cooperation has also given the engineers at AKM insights about Senseair's unique know-how and ability.

AKM is a major supplier to the automotive industry and sees great potential in an in-depth relationship with Senseair, i.e. to continue the development of:

  • indoor air quality measurement/control
  • alcohol and carbon dioxide sensors for vehicles
  • "Internet of Things" solutions for smart homes and cities
  • environmental monitoring

AKM develops and manufactures semiconductor technology (silicon etc.) segments and sensors for various applications. Their materials technology is world-leading for applications in "invisible light", UV and IR, with so-called Group III-V material.

Senseair and AKM are now focusing on air quality and safety in the automotive environment and a new full sensor generation in carbon dioxide as well as new solutions for "screening" alcohol abuse in vehicles.

AKM's intention is to invest in the development of products, services and production of sensors in Sweden. The company will be operated under the Senseair brand and with the same management.

"Senseair is already an international company with sales in Europe, the United States and Asia. Becoming a part of AKM will, through its strong position in the automotive industry, give us more power to grow, especially with our sensor technology for cars that help ensure fresh air and safe drivers", says Peter Lageson, CEO of Senseair.

Senseair's founder, Hans Martin, sees the need for a major player who can invest in development and production to cope with growing demand.

"AKM works, like many Japanese companies, on the long term, and it feels good that they want to continue to invest in Sweden, where our unique skills regarding gas and air sensors are available.”

Just three months ago, Senseair AB acquired Hök Instrument AB to strengthen their joint venture around alcohol sensors. Bertil Hök, the founder of Hök Instrument AB, has high expectations for AKM on a continued strong focus on innovations.

"Together with the new owners, we share the ambition to take solid steps in the value chain and continue to address important societal challenges, such as harmful effects from alcohol and other drugs.
